When Is the Best Time of Year to Pressure Wash Your Driveway?

Timing your driveway cleaning correctly can make a real difference to the results. Find out when to book your professional clean.

One of the most common questions we get from homeowners is: "When should I have my driveway pressure washed?" The answer depends on several factors, but there are some clear guidelines that will help you get the best possible results from your clean.

Spring is by far the most popular time for driveway and patio cleaning, and for good reason. After a long, wet UK winter, driveways and patios accumulate a significant build-up of moss, algae, and general grime. The warmer spring temperatures are also ideal for the application of sealants after cleaning, as sealants generally need temperatures above 5°C to cure properly.

Booking in early spring -- March or April -- means you'll have a clean, sealed surface to enjoy throughout the summer. It's also the perfect time to get your patio ready for outdoor entertaining season.

Summer: Great for Sealing

Summer is an excellent time for pressure washing because the warm, dry weather means surfaces dry out quickly after cleaning, which is particularly important if you're planning to have your driveway or patio sealed afterwards. Sealants require a dry surface to adhere properly, and they cure best in warm conditions.

The main downside of summer is that professional cleaning companies tend to be very busy, so booking well in advance is advisable.

Autumn: Treating Before Winter

Having your driveway cleaned in autumn makes a lot of sense -- you're removing the summer's accumulated grime before the harsh winter weather sets in, and you can apply a fresh coat of sealant to protect the surface through the cold, wet months ahead. A clean, sealed driveway is far less susceptible to frost damage and staining from road salt.

Winter: Possible but Not Ideal

Professional pressure washing can be carried out in winter, but there are some limitations. Sealants cannot be applied in freezing conditions, so if your surface needs sealing, you'll need to wait for a frost-free period. However, cleaning alone can be done year-round in mild conditions, and treating moss and algae in winter can prevent the heavy growth that typically appears in spring.

Our Recommendation

We generally recommend booking your driveway or patio clean for spring or early summer, followed by a fresh application of sealant. This gives you maximum protection for the year ahead and ensures your outdoor spaces look their best when you're most likely to use them.
