Block Paving Cleaning & Restoration

Specialist block paving cleaning to remove black spot, weeds, moss and algae -- with optional joint re-sanding and sealing for a complete, lasting restoration.

Block paving is the UK's most popular choice for driveways and patios -- and for good reason. It looks fantastic when well maintained, is durable and long-lasting, and adds real kerb appeal and value to any property. But block paving requires specialist maintenance to stay in top condition.

Over time, block paving accumulates black spot fungal growth, moss, algae, weeds in the joints, and general grime that simply can't be shifted with a domestic hosepipe or consumer pressure washer. Our specialist block paving cleaning service uses commercial rotary surface cleaners, professional-grade pre-treatment solutions, and expert technique to restore your block paving to its original beauty -- and keep it that way with optional re-sanding and sealing.

Benefits of Our Block Paving Service

  • Removes black spot fungal growth that regular cleaning cannot shift
  • Kills and clears moss, algae and lichen from block surfaces and joints
  • Eliminates weed growth from between blocks, including roots
  • Rotary surface cleaner ensures an even result -- no streaking or lines

  • Optional joint re-sanding and sealing to complete the restoration

Common Block Paving Problems We Solve

Every block paving surface is different. Here are the most common issues we resolve.

Black Spot

Black spot is a fungal growth (Venturia inaqualis) that penetrates block surfaces and causes deep, dark staining that cannot be removed by hosing or light pressure washing. Our specialist pre-treatment biocide combined with commercial pressure washing eliminates black spot from block paving permanently.

Weeds in Joints

Weeds between block paving joints are one of the most common complaints we hear. They can quickly destabilise the surface and spread if left unchecked. We remove all weed growth during cleaning, and our re-sanding and sealing service locks joints shut to prevent re-establishment.

Joint Re-Sanding

After pressure washing, joint sand must be replaced. We brush in kiln-dried jointing sand to the correct depth, stabilising the blocks and preventing movement. This is a critical step that many cheaper operators skip -- resulting in unstable paving within months.

Moss & Algae

Green and black biological growth makes block paving look dirty and can make it dangerously slippery. Our pre-treatment solutions kill moss and algae at the root, with pressure washing removing all traces from the surface.

Our Process

1

Inspection & Pre-Treatment

We inspect the block paving for any damaged or loose blocks and treat the entire surface with a specialist algaecide and biocide solution. This is left to dwell and begin breaking down biological growth at the root.

2

Rotary Surface Cleaning

Using a commercial rotary surface cleaner, we wash every area of the block paving evenly and consistently. The rotary cleaner provides a far superior result to a standard lance -- no streaking, no lines, and an even clean across all blocks.

3

Edge & Detail Work

We carefully clean all edges, borders, kerb lines, and corners that the rotary cleaner can't access. Weed-filled joints along edges and between blocks are cleared using targeted lance work.

4

Joint Re-Sanding

Fresh kiln-dried jointing sand is brushed across the entire surface and worked into the joints to the correct depth. This restabilises the blocks and prepares the surface for sealing if required.

5

Sealing (Optional)

We apply a professional-grade sealant in your chosen finish (matt, satin or gloss) -- locking in the jointing sand, preventing future weed growth, and protecting against oil and staining. Sealant lasts 3-5 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you remove black spot from block paving?

Black spot is caused by a fungal spore that penetrates deep into the surface of paving blocks. We apply a specialist biocide pre-treatment that kills the fungal growth at the root, then use commercial-grade pressure washing to remove all traces from the surface. This combination is the only effective way to remove black spot permanently -- surface-only treatment without the pre-soak will not work.

Will pressure washing damage my block paving?

Not when carried out correctly with the right equipment and technique. We use rotary surface cleaners rather than direct lance washing, which distributes the pressure evenly and prevents the "stripey" effect caused by lance washing. The rotary cleaner cleans the blocks thoroughly without gouging the surface or dislodging all the jointing sand.

Do I need to re-sand my block paving after cleaning?

Yes -- re-sanding is an important step we strongly recommend after every professional clean. Pressure washing inevitably removes some of the jointing sand from between the blocks. Without replacing this sand, the blocks are left unstable and the empty joints quickly fill with weed seeds. We use kiln-dried jointing sand which, when combined with sealing, locks the joints in place for years.

How long after cleaning can I drive on my block paving?

After cleaning only (no sealing), you can use the driveway immediately. After re-sanding and sealing, we recommend leaving the surface for 24 hours before foot traffic, and 48 hours before driving on it. In warm weather, the cure time may be shorter -- we'll advise you based on the conditions on the day.

My block paving has some loose or damaged blocks -- can you fix those too?

We can relay minor areas of loose or sunken blocks as an additional service in many cases. Please mention any damaged areas when you contact us and we'll assess whether this is something we can include in the quote. Major structural repairs are outside our scope, but we can recommend reputable paving contractors for larger remedial work.

What Our Customers Say

D

David & Sarah Morriston

Amington, Tamworth

We had our block paving driveway cleaned, re-sanded and sealed by Tamworth Brighter Drives & Patios and the result is absolutely stunning. The driveway was in a terrible state -- covered in black spot and moss with weeds throughout the joints. The team spent a full day on it and the transformation is remarkable. It honestly looks better than it did when it was first laid 12 years ago. Very professional, punctual, and they left everything clean and tidy. Couldn't recommend them more highly.

Kevin & Alison Bramble

Fazeley

We had our whole driveway cleaned and the path down the side of the house done at the same time. The team was on time, very professional, and the results are exactly what we hoped for. The side path was particularly bad -- barely passable and very slippery -- and it's now completely clear and safe. Our driveway looks like it did when we moved in eight years ago. Great value for money. We'll be booking them for an annual clean from now on.

Rachel Thornton-Smythe

Solihull

We were preparing to sell our house and wanted to improve the kerb appeal. The driveway and patio were clean but dull, and the block paving joints were full of weeds. Tamworth Brighter Drives & Patios cleaned, re-sanded, and sealed the whole lot and our estate agent commented that it had made a real difference to how the property presented. We had several offers within the first week of listing. Partly down to the presentation -- and the driveway was a big part of that. Brilliant work.
