How Often Should You Have Your Driveway Professionally Cleaned?

There's no single answer -- it depends on your surface type, location and traffic levels. Here's how to decide.

One of the most common questions we're asked is how often a driveway needs professional cleaning. The honest answer is that it varies considerably depending on a range of factors. Here's a guide to help you assess how frequently your driveway needs attention.

Key Factors That Affect Cleaning Frequency

Surface type: Porous surfaces such as block paving and natural stone tend to accumulate dirt and biological growth more quickly than sealed concrete or tarmac. Unsealed surfaces generally need more frequent cleaning than sealed ones.

Location and aspect: Driveways in shaded areas -- particularly those facing north, or overshadowed by large trees -- are much more prone to moss and algae growth and may need cleaning annually. Driveways in full sun dry out quickly and tend to stay cleaner for longer.

Tree proximity: If your driveway is near trees, falling leaves and organic debris will accelerate the build-up of organic matter and staining. Tree sap is particularly stubborn.

Traffic levels: A busy driveway used by multiple vehicles every day will show wear and staining faster than one used infrequently.

Whether the surface is sealed: A properly sealed surface is dramatically more resistant to staining and biological growth, and may only need professional cleaning every two to three years rather than annually.

General Guidelines

  • Unsealed block paving: Annual professional clean recommended
  • Sealed block paving: Every two to three years, plus re-sealing
  • Indian sandstone (unsealed): Annual clean recommended
  • Indian sandstone (sealed): Every two to three years
  • Tarmac: Every two to three years, plus sealing
  • Concrete: Every two to three years, or when visibly stained

Signs That Your Driveway Needs Cleaning Now

Regardless of the above guidelines, some signs indicate that your driveway needs attention sooner: visible green algae or black spot growth, moss appearing in the joints, persistent oil stains that don't shift with regular cleaning, or the surface appearing noticeably darker and dirtier than when new.
