How to Maintain Block Paving: A Complete Homeowner's Guide

Block paving is a fantastic investment for any home, but it requires regular maintenance to stay looking its best. Here's everything you need to know.

Block paving driveways and patios are one of the most popular choices for UK homeowners, and it's easy to see why. They look fantastic when new, they're durable, and they add real kerb appeal to any property. However, like any outdoor surface, block paving requires regular maintenance to keep it looking its best and to extend its lifespan.

Why Regular Maintenance Matters

Block paving is porous, which means it absorbs water, dirt, and organic matter over time. Left unchecked, this leads to the growth of algae, moss, and lichen -- not only unsightly but also making the surface dangerously slippery in wet weather. Weeds will also take hold in the joints between blocks, gradually dislodging the sand and causing the surface to become uneven.

Regular maintenance prevents these problems from taking hold and saves you significant expense in the long run. A well-maintained block paving driveway can last 20 to 30 years or more.

Annual Cleaning

The most important maintenance task is an annual professional clean. While you can use a domestic pressure washer for light surface cleaning, a professional service uses commercial-grade rotary surface cleaners that provide a more even, deeper clean without damaging the blocks or blasting away the jointing sand.

Professional cleaners also use specialist pre-treatment solutions to kill algae, moss, and lichen at the root, rather than simply blasting them off the surface temporarily.

Re-Sanding the Joints

After pressure washing, the joints between blocks will have lost some of their kiln-dried jointing sand. This needs to be replaced by brushing fresh kiln-dried sand across the entire surface and working it into the joints with a stiff brush or plate compactor. This step is critical -- it stabilises the blocks, prevents movement, and reduces the risk of weeds establishing themselves.

Sealing Your Block Paving

Sealing is the single best thing you can do to protect your block paving. A quality sealant applied after cleaning and re-sanding will:

  • Lock in the jointing sand and prevent loss
  • Prevent weed seeds from germinating in the joints
  • Protect the blocks from oil, fuel, and other stains
  • Enhance the colour (available in matt or wet-look finishes)
  • Make the surface much easier to clean in future

Sealing should be redone every three to five years, depending on traffic levels and exposure.

Day-to-Day Maintenance

Between professional cleans, there are several things you can do to keep your block paving looking good. Sweep regularly to remove leaves, debris, and dirt before it can become ingrained. Deal with any oil or fuel spills immediately using an absorbent material like cat litter, then a specialist degreaser. Pull up any weeds as soon as they appear, before they can establish a root system.

When to Call a Professional

If your block paving has significant black spot, heavy moss growth, persistent weeds, or oil staining that home remedies haven't shifted, it's time to call a professional cleaning company. Attempting to use too much pressure at home can cause permanent damage to the surface and dislodge the jointing sand, leading to an uneven, unstable surface.
