Top 5 Mistakes Homeowners Make with Their Driveways

Avoid these common driveway care mistakes that can lead to unnecessary damage and expense.

After years of cleaning and restoring driveways across Tamworth and the Midlands, we've seen the same mistakes made time and again. Here are the five most common -- and how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Using Too Much Pressure at Home

This is probably the single most common driveway mistake we see. Homeowners hire or buy domestic pressure washers and blast their driveways at maximum pressure, thinking more pressure equals better results. In reality, excessive pressure damages the surface -- it can blast aggregate from tarmac, erode natural stone, and dislodge jointing sand from block paving. Always use the lowest effective pressure for your surface type.

Mistake 2: Ignoring the Joints

Many homeowners clean the surface of their block paving but pay no attention to the joints. The joints between blocks are critical to the stability and appearance of the driveway. Losing jointing sand leads to unstable, wobbly blocks; empty joints allow weed seeds to establish easily. After cleaning, always re-sand the joints with kiln-dried jointing sand.

Mistake 3: Sealing Over a Dirty Surface

We occasionally encounter driveways where a sealant has been applied without proper cleaning first. This seals in the dirt, biological growth, and staining, creating a permanent, dark coating that looks dreadful and is very difficult to correct. Always thoroughly clean and dry a surface before applying any sealant.

Mistake 4: Using Bleach on Natural Stone

Bleach is a common go-to for tackling biological growth, but it's the wrong product for natural stone surfaces. It can permanently bleach the colour from sandstone, cause chemical reactions with some stone minerals, and damage the surface texture. Always use pH-neutral, stone-safe products on natural stone.

Mistake 5: Leaving It Too Long Between Cleans

The longer a driveway goes without proper cleaning, the more established the biological growth becomes, and the harder it is to remove. What would take a few hours to clean if addressed regularly can take a full day or more if left for many years. Regular maintenance is always more cost-effective than occasional restoration.
