Not all driveway sealants are the same. Here's what the different options mean and how to choose the right one for your surface.
Walk into any builders" merchant or DIY store and you'll find a bewildering array of driveway and patio sealants. Choosing the wrong product can lead to disappointing results -- or worse, damage to your surface. Here's a guide to understanding the different options.
The Main Types of Sealant
Impregnating sealants (also called penetrating sealants) soak into the surface rather than forming a film on top. They protect the surface from within while leaving the appearance virtually unchanged -- this is the most natural-looking option. They're ideal for natural stone surfaces where you want to preserve the stone's original appearance.
Film-forming sealants sit on top of the surface and create a visible coating. They're available in matt, satin, or gloss (wet-look) finishes. These are typically used on block paving and concrete, where you want to enhance the colour and provide maximum stain resistance.
Jointing sealants are specifically formulated for block paving and are designed to stabilise the jointing sand between blocks while also protecting the surface. They lock the sand in place, preventing loss and deterring weed growth.
Choosing a Finish
Matt finish: The most subtle option -- provides protection without significantly altering the appearance of the surface. Good choice for natural stone or traditional block paving where you want a natural look.
Wet-look / gloss finish: Intensifies the colour of the surface and gives a permanently "just washed" appearance. Very popular for block paving. Does show footprints and water marks more than matt finishes.
Satin finish: A middle ground between matt and gloss -- provides some colour enhancement without the full wet-look effect.
Professional vs DIY Application
Sealant application sounds straightforward but achieving an even, bubble-free, streak-free result across a large area requires practice and the right equipment. Uneven application can cause patchy colour and accelerated wear. Professional application using spray equipment ensures even coverage and better product penetration.
