Wondering what your patio will look like after sealing? Here's a realistic guide to the before, during, and after of a professional patio seal.
Many homeowners are curious about what their patio will actually look like after professional sealing. The answer depends on the finish you choose and the condition of the surface, but here's a realistic guide to what you can expect at every stage.
Before Sealing: The Cleaning Stage
Sealing should never be applied to a dirty or damp surface. Before any sealant can go down, the surface needs to be professionally cleaned, allowed to dry thoroughly, and (in the case of block paving) re-sanded.
This is an important point: if someone offers to seal your patio without cleaning it first, walk away. Sealing over dirt and biological growth will trap it beneath the coating, leading to an uneven appearance and reduced longevity.
Choosing Your Finish
You'll typically be offered a choice of finish:
Natural / Matt: Protects the surface without significantly changing its appearance. The patio will look clean and fresh but not dramatically different in colour. This is a popular choice for traditional natural stone patios where preserving the original character is important.
Wet-Look / Gloss: Intensifies the colour of the surface, giving a permanently "just rained on" appearance. Very popular for block paving -- colours that looked faded and dull are transformed into rich, vibrant tones.
Satin: A middle ground that enhances colour subtly without full gloss.
During Application
Sealant is typically applied using a roller or spray equipment, working systematically across the surface in overlapping passes. Two coats are usually applied for the best protection and most even finish. Each coat needs adequate drying time before the next is applied.
The surface will look wet or shiny during application -- this is normal. The final appearance becomes clear once the sealant has fully cured.
After Sealing: Drying and Curing
The sealant will be touch-dry within a few hours under good drying conditions. However, full cure -- when the sealant reaches its maximum hardness and protection -- takes 24 to 48 hours. During this time, the surface should be kept clear of foot traffic and vehicles.
After full cure, you'll have a beautifully protected surface that's dramatically easier to maintain and will look great for years to come.
