Pressure Washing Tarmac: Everything You Need to Know

Tarmac driveways need specialist care when pressure washing. Too much pressure can cause real damage. Here's how to get it right.

Tarmac is one of the most common driveway surfaces in the UK, but it's also one that's frequently damaged by improper cleaning. Many homeowners -- and even some less experienced cleaning companies -- make the mistake of using too much pressure, which can strip the surface aggregate and cause irreversible damage. Here's what you need to know about cleaning tarmac safely and effectively.

The Challenge with Tarmac

Tarmac (also known as macadam or asphalt) is a mixture of aggregate stone bound together with a bitumen binder. The surface is relatively soft compared to concrete or natural stone, and it becomes even more pliable in warm weather. This means that excessive pressure washing -- particularly in summer -- can literally blast the surface aggregate away, leaving a rough, pitted surface.

The right approach is to use lower pressure settings, appropriate nozzle types, and to keep the lance at a greater distance from the surface than you would for harder materials.

What Can Be Cleaned from Tarmac

Despite the need for care, professional tarmac cleaning can achieve excellent results. We can remove:

  • Moss, algae and lichen growth
  • General dirt and grime
  • Fuel and oil stains (with specialist degreasers)
  • Road grime and salt residue
  • Leaf stains and organic material

Tarmac Restoration

One of the most dramatic improvements we can make to an older tarmac driveway is restoration. Over time, tarmac oxidises and loses its rich black colour, turning grey and faded. After cleaning, a tarmac restorer can be applied that rejuvenates the colour and adds a protective coating. The result is a driveway that looks almost brand new at a fraction of the cost of replacement.

Sealing Tarmac

Sealing tarmac after cleaning and restoration protects it from further weathering, UV damage, and oil staining. It also significantly extends the life of the tarmac surface by preventing water ingress that leads to cracking and pothole formation.

Signs That Your Tarmac Needs Professional Attention

  • Surface appears grey or faded rather than black
  • Visible moss, algae, or weed growth
  • Oil or fuel staining
  • Surface feels rough or gritty underfoot
  • Cracks beginning to appear at the edges
