Can You Pressure Wash a Resin Bound Driveway?

Resin bound driveways are increasingly popular but need careful cleaning. Here's what you need to know.

Resin bound driveways have become increasingly popular over the past decade, and it's easy to see why. They're attractive, permeable (which helps with planning permission), and low-maintenance compared to block paving. But they do require specialist cleaning, and not all pressure washing companies have experience with this surface type.

Can You Pressure Wash Resin Bound Surfaces?

Yes -- but with care. Resin bound driveways consist of natural aggregate stone bound together with a polyurethane resin. The surface is smooth and tightly packed, which makes it fairly resistant to dirt ingress. However, algae and general grime can still accumulate on the surface, particularly in shaded areas or during wet weather.

The key is to use the correct pressure settings. Too much pressure can damage the resin binder, causing the stone aggregate to become dislodged and leaving a rough, uneven surface. Most resin bound surfaces should be cleaned at a pressure no higher than around 100 bar, using a fan nozzle and keeping the lance at a comfortable distance from the surface.

What Can Be Cleaned from Resin Bound Driveways

  • General dirt and dust accumulation
  • Algae and organic growth (particularly in shaded areas)
  • Leaf staining and organic matter
  • Tyre marks and general traffic grime

What Cannot Be Treated at Home

Heavy algae growth, stubborn staining, or loss of colour from UV exposure are best addressed by a professional cleaning company with experience of resin bound surfaces. We use controlled pressure settings, appropriate nozzle types, and pH-neutral cleaning products suitable for resin surfaces.

Preventative Maintenance

Sweeping regularly to remove debris, and occasional hosing to remove surface dust, will help keep your resin bound driveway looking good between professional cleans. Most resin bound driveways need professional cleaning every two to three years under normal conditions.
